Thin is in: LG shares a glimpse of its 5 megapixel hottie phone

April 6, 2008

Filed under:

Great news, Mr. and Mrs. Tighty Pants: carrying five megapixels in your pocket is about to become a little less obvious! The latest member of LG's storied Black Label line -- other alumni being the Chocolate and the Shine -- is starting to break cover, and for what the slider might lack in sheer visual distinction, it makes up in technical prowess. The as-yet-unnamed slider promises to be the thinnest 5 megapixel cameraphone in the world when it launches, featuring a reinforced glass touchscreen up front (just a little Glimmer-esque, if you ask us) and a shell constructed from carbon fiber. Other than that, LG's being a little stingy with details at this point, saying that it'll unveil the handset's name later this month -- hopefully along with pricing and a full spec sheet. The phone will hit Europe first with a number of other launches across the globe thereafter, finally hitting LG's own South Korea in the second half.

Everex’s new MyMiniPC: $500 and gOS-powered

April 6, 2008

Filed under:

Everex is popping off a new gOS powered box tonight, given the unfortunate monicker of MyMiniPC. While $500 is way more than enough to get you started on a low-end Windows box (and even most of the way there toward a Mac mini), the MyMiniPC comes equipped with a 1.86GHz Pentium T2130 and 512MB RAM running gOS "Space", a 120GB drive, DVD±RW, firewire, four USB 2.0 ports, DVI and S-Video out gigabit Ethernet, media reader, and standard audio ins/outs. Everex is all playing up the whole space theme and MySpace integration, segueing that into avatar-based help experience called "Dave" (i.e. use the Ask Dave function to get help). So, what, does that make us all HALs? Too meta, Everex. Larger interface shot after the break.

Egoman offers up MP810RSTD-43 portable media player

April 6, 2008

Last we heard from Egoman Technology, it was taking notes from Samsung in order to craft an eerily similar PMP of its own. The MP810RSTD-43, however, actually doesn't look half bad on paper. This widescreen player sports a 4.3-inch 480 x 272 resolution touchscreen, handles RMVB, MP3, WMA, WAV, APC, FLAC, JPG, BMP and GIF file formats and FM radio signals; you'll also find up to 8GB of internal memory and a voice recorder. Per usual, this one touts text viewing, TV output, USB 2.0 connectivity and a built-in equalizer to treat your ears the way they deserve to be treated. Not a clue on pricing here, but if you're keen on ordering boatloads of Chinese electronics rather than just one or two, we're sure it would be willing to talk.

Van Der Led’s Jisus laptop is the answer to your prayers

April 6, 2008

Filed under:

The Jisus laptop? We're asking ourselves the same questions you are. We've never heard of Van Der Led, and we've certainly never heard of the Jisus -- but boy are we intrigued. Apparently, the multi-colored (and multi-graphic'd) little guys will feature an 800 x 480, 8.9-inch LCD display, a 1GHz Loongson CPU (???), 512MB of RAM, 4GB of flash storage, 802.11b/g, stereo speakers, and a whole slew of familiar ports. The Eee-wannabe will apparently come with Ubuntu pre-installed (though frankly it's unclear), and will be retailing for €299 when it hits the streets (the European streets, that is) on April 25th. Check the video after the break to see odd, ominously silent images of the device, accompanied by fascinating data.

[Thanks, Gydo]

Sprint licenses Visual Voicemail for the Samsung Instinct

April 6, 2008

Filed under:

It looks like Samsung's Instinct won't just be kinda-sorta doing some iPhone stuff -- it will be doing actual iPhone stuff. Sprint announced that it has licensed Klausner's Visual Voicemail (yes, Visual Voicemail) for use in the familiar looking device, adding weight to the argument that this is the carrier's official play for the iPhone market. If you'll recall, Klausner sued AT&T and Apple over the feature, which it claims violated two of its patents. Now all they need to do is throw Cover Flow, Google Maps integration, and some wiggly icons on there, and this race will really get heated.

Indonesian mosques to get superfast broadband at discount prices

April 6, 2008

Filed under:

Think you're getting a decent speed for a decent price on your broadband? Well think again. Kuala Lumpur-based Velchip has just announced plans to create a vast broadband-over-powerline network which will deliver 224Mbps to users in Indonesia for about RM5 (or $1.57) per month. The goal is to connect Mosques across the country, linking together 400,000 houses of worship over existing wiring and delivering service to about 60 million users. The $14 billion project will be rolled out over the next three years, with participation from US satellite company STM Networks. It all makes that $149.95 DOCSIS 3.0 introduction look pretty weak, now doesn't it?

Update: There was a bit of a mixup over whether this service was coming to Malaysia or Indonesia -- we've corrected the problem.

Swarovski-bedazzled Nespresso Coffee Maker

April 6, 2008

If you've covered your entire house in gold and diamonds and are left with little else to pimp out, you can always move on to the kitchen. The Nespresso Crystal Edition coffee machine is covered with 3100 Swarovski crystals and will only run you about £1,995 (or about $4,000). But does it make coffee? Does it ever - it comes with a removable grill for macciato lattes, sports an illuminated collecting pan for your used coffee capsules, and does it all with the single press of a pretty, shiny, blingy button.

Researchers turn brushing your teeth into child’s play

April 6, 2008

Kids -- they hate brushing their teeth. Sure, we try and show them pictures of zombie faces and toothless seniors, but it just doesn't work. Finally, someone has come up with a solution to the problem: make it fun. Researchers at the National Taiwan University have devised a scheme which turns brushing your teeth into a webcam-tracked video game. Using an LED-studded toothbrush, a camera mounted above a mirror, and an LCD display, kids can watch plaque and debris get annihilated from a cartoon mouth while they scrub their choppers. The system is able to track detailed, three-dimensional movement of the child's hand, covering 24 separate areas of the mouth. Kids who tested the system were found to brush twice as well as those who hadn't used it, but were also extremely cocky about their perfect teeth. Check the video after the break to see the magic happen.

KNC M-700 PMP swipes some Nokia 5310 looks

April 6, 2008

It's a little sad when a "unique" entry in the PMP market means knocking off Nokia design (here we have a sterling example of the 5130) instead of Apple. That said, the M-700 from KNC seems to be a decent unit, with a 2.6-inch widescreen display, 400MHz processor and codecs galore -- including DivX and XviD. There's 4GB of storage built in, but no word on price or expandability.
