Sony dumping off old SIXAXIS controllers in MGS4 “Welcome Box” PS3 bundles

May 2, 2008

Filed under:

Now that the Dual Shock 3 is finally here, it looks like Sony's finding creative way to dump off old SIXAXIS stock -- like tossing 'em in MGS4 PS3 bundles. Japanese PS3 buyers will be able to choose from three "Welcome Box" MGS4 bundles in Satin Silver, Ceramic White, and Clear Black, and in addition to Snake's latest adventure and a Dual Shock 3, they'll find a SIXAXIS inside. The bundles will cost ¥49,800 ($470), compared to ¥51,800 ($492) for the gunmetal gray bundle that doesn't include the extra controller, so basically Sony's giving Japanese buyers $20 to take a SIXAXIS home. That's quite a deal, but honestly, we'd rather take drop the Jackson on that super-hot gunmetal unit home than have another (obsolete) controller lying around.

T-Mobile 3G goes live, with data (kind of)

May 2, 2008

T-Mobile's 3G network started going live today, and it looks like that early word from a company memo may not hold true for all users. Some markets may in fact have a silent soft-launch of faster data rates, we've heard from several tipsters who've said that they're already getting faster data service, and now the company itself getting the word out that it's launching data as well. But company peeps were indeed instructed to make sure customers don't count on that faster data being present; bottom line is you may have it, you may not (but if you take T-Mobile at its word, you should). NYC is the first market to light up, but others should come online soon -- anyone trying it out? How's it going? Hit us up in comments and let us know!

Segway i2 now available in Metallic Sage, still not inviting

May 2, 2008

Filed under:

We appreciate the effort, we really do, but we can't see a new hue as being the adjustment that coaxes the world to stop laughing at the Segway i2. Nevertheless, those who have convinced themselves that they just have to have a two-wheeled transporter can now snatch one up in Metallic Sage. Of course, it's not like anyone outside of the i2 owners circle will even notice the difference, but hey, we've heard that some seriously great relationships have come from within that exclusive sect. Sike.

Overall car truck sales down a whopping 12 percent

Overall car truck sales down a whopping 12 percent
Overall car truck sales down a whopping 12 percent - Latest News, Features, and Reviews - Automobile Magazine

First quarter U.S. light truck sales are down 12 percent compared to first quarter 2007 sales, according to Automotive News data.

That startling number comes as fuel and food prices continue to rise, making it particularly tough for consumers to rationalize shopping for a new truck or SUV. Dealers say many previous truck owners have also been downsizing their vehicles for smaller cars, which in turn has flooded the market with used trucks and SUVs.

Some particularly stunning news from the 2008 first quarter sales figures:

Ford F-series and Dodge Ram sales all are down by more than 22,000 units compared to the same quarter in 2007. Likewise, Silverado sales are down by nearly 30,000 units, a 20 percent drop in demand.

For the most part, minivan sales are slightly down, but remain steady. The biggest first quarter sales losers were the Dodge Caravan/Grand Caravan and the Honda Odyssey, which only found 33,271 and 33,697 new homes, respectively. In 2007's first quarter, Dodge sold nearly 20,000 more Caravan models, while Honda was able to move almost 3,700 more Odysseys.

Compared 2007's first quarter, sales of the Chrysler Aspen rose almost 1,000 units, while Dodge Durango sales dropped by more than 5,000 units.

The Ford Escape, Mercury Mariner, and even the Ford Ranger are hot sellers. Escape sales are up more than 10 percent, and Mariner sales are up 8 percent compared to 2007 first quarter numbers. Ford Ranger sales have increased by more than 3,000 units compared to 2007 first quarter numbers - not bad for a truck that hasn't changed much in the past two decades.

How would you change HP’s 2133 Mini-Note PC?

May 2, 2008

Filed under:

Sure, ASUS' Eee PC may have done quite a bit to spark the subnote revolution, but HP's 2133 Mini-Note PC has received an incredible amount of fanfare on its own. As soon as HP's order page went live, however, we began to hear grumblings like "Where's my option for XP?," and "I'm stuck with a VIA?" Nevertheless, reviewers found an awful lot to love about HP's first foray into the land of bargain-priced wee lappies, but we know the critical sect is out there keeping 'em honest. Now that the machines have been shipping for over a fortnight, we're interested to hear from you early adopters. Is it everything you hoped it would be? How on earth could the next model be improved upon? The floor is yours.

9X Media shoots for multi-monitor crown with 30 LCD monster

May 2, 2008

Filed under:

While we wouldn't be surprised if there's at least a few makeshift multi-monitor setups out there to challenge it, as far as ready-made solutions go, it's pretty tough to beat this massive rig from 9X Media, which packs a room-busting 30 screens. What's more, you can apparently get it configured with your choice of 19- to 32-inch displays, which can be arranged in any number of different configurations (complete with multi-screen servers). Of course, if that's a bit too excessive for you, 9X Media will also gladly sell you any number of smaller configurations, although you'll have to chat them up for a quote if you move beyond the nine to twelve screen range.

Fujitsu lets loose U810, T2010 tablet PCs

May 2, 2008

Filed under:

Fujitsu wasn't all that specific about pricing or release details when it announced its new U810 and T2010 tablet PCs earlier this year, but it looks like both have now finally made their way out the door. In case you missed it, the big addition this time around is the inclusion of a built-in HSPA modem (and rather obvious antenna), which will run you an extra $200 on top of the $999 and $1,499 base prices for the U810 and T2010, respectively. Otherwise, you can expect the same 5.6-inch and 12.1-inch displays as before, along with the usual 800MHz Intel A110 processor on the U810 and a decidedly speedier Core 2 Duo 7600 processor on the T2010, among other specs not too different from the previous models.

Survey finds 37% of Gen Y-ers text while driving

May 2, 2008

Oh sure, Americans are adamantly against texting while driving (in theory), but that's not stopping those mischievous Gen Y-ers from getting their SMS on while behind the wheel. According to a new survey of 1,200 people conducted by Nationwide Mutual Insurance (we know, we know), a third of the Gen Y-ers admitted to "always multitasking while driving," and while the "always" bit does indeed frighten us a tad, the real juice was in the next statistic: 37-percent said they sent text messages while driving. Before you start belaboring the imprudent youth, think long and hard about your own in-car cellphone usage -- remember that time you just had to reply "y w pep plz" in order to salvage your friend's pizza order? Tsk tsk.
