Nokia 3700 Classic: the curved Series 40 candybar that never was?

Samsung's Nexus S might be the phone that helps take the convex style mainstream, but it's hardly the first -- take Motorola's crazy UIQ-equipped Z8 and Z10 "banana phones," for example. Looks like Nokia had at one time planned to introduce a slick curved candybar to the market, too -- the so-called 3700 Classic -- thanks to a video posted on Vimeo that has all the trappings of a professionally-produced teaser ad. The operating system appears to be Series 40, slotting it below the company's Symbian fare and putting it in dumbphone territory. Word on the street is that this thing was probably canceled -- and though we can't get too excited about a Series 40 candybar, this could've been the pinnacle of Espoo's Series 40 line had it actually made it to market. Follow the break for the full video.

Manufacturers trying new mobile advertising tactic: ‘your current phone sucks’

Advertising competing products in search engine results is a concept nearly as old as internet search engines themselves, but mobile's still a relatively new, untested frontier -- and naturally, it's a frontier that phone manufacturers and carriers are ready to turn into a battlefield. Turns out both Nokia and RIM (and presumably most of the other major manufacturers) have done at least some "intercept campaigning," as it's called, where code in mobile ads is used to detect the user's device and -- if it's not a device made by the advertising manufacturer -- you're lightly chided and told you'd be better off with the other product. Carriers are doing some of this, too -- Loopt has apparently been approached by two unnamed network operators who've specifically asked the company to block in-app advertising from their competitors, which shows that these guys are being both proactive and reactive to the trend. Fight!

NHL Winter Classic game will be in 3D New Year’s Day, find out where to watch

Whether or not you've been keeping up with HBO's 24/7 episodes, most hockey fans know that the yearly outdoor Winter Classic is scheduled for tomorrow between the Penguins and Capitals, but you may not know it will also be broadcast in 3D (the second one this season.) According to the NHL's page it will be available "worldwide" and we've confirmed Comcast, Cox, DirecTV, Cablevision Shaw and Telus are on the list. They're likely not the only ones, with Versus broadcasting if your provider has a dedicated 3D event channel and the sports network (especially if they broadcast the Oregon/Cal football game earlier this fall) it's a good bet it will be on but we'd check with them first. Here's hoping that next time around (the Heritage Classic game in February will be in 3D too) there's a slightly more coordinated effort to let those who might be interested in watching know where and how to tune in.

Promotional tour hitting the road for Cameron’s next 3D flick ‘Sanctum’

It may be more than a year before Avatar is easily available for home viewing in 3D, but James Cameron's next 3D flick is already about to hit theaters. On Sanctum he's only executive producing and not directing, but don't be surprised to see his name and notes that the movie uses techniques pioneered by Avatar throughout the marketing campaign, which will include a tour hitting several southern states throughout January to show off the trailer in 3D. Scheduled to open February 4th, it's an action-thriller about a group of cave divers trapped underwater -- check out the regular 2D trailer embedded after the break.
